The Panasonic DMC-ZS8 14.1 Mega Pixel impressive zoom Phenomenon

The Panasonic DMC-ZS8
Panasonic DMC-ZS8: 16 x Optical Zoom
When it comes to point and soot cameras this generation is leaning more to the smartphones built in point and shoot than independent options. So it's very rare when a point a shoot camera impresses us to the point that you just want to run out and tell the world and shout it from the roof tops and the Panasonic DMC-ZS8 does just that with an impressive 16x optical zoom that his as good on paper as it is in real life situations.

The Zoom Capability

The Panasonic DMC-ZS8
Impressive Zoom that brings you right next to the action from afar.

Let me begin this review with the most impressive thing we noticed right after getting this device for testing. My friend who got the jump on me asked me to check this out. Not being a big point and shoot camera fan I took the device and gave it a shrewd look over and did not see anything impressive at first glance until he asked me from the vantage point we were at on a mountainside to use the zoom to try and take a picture of a building we were seeing on a adjacent mount side, being barley able to see the building my self I was beside myself when the zoom was able to bring the building into full view, for a minute i swear i was using a pair of binoculars.
So excited I decided to shoot some close range objects and using the zoom capability I was able to take predestine shots, especially of objects which were just out of reach and with the seamless zoom I was able to do a close up all without moving from my comfort zone to angle my self for a better shot.

Sharp and detailed pictures

What about Picture Quality?

Picture quality on this handy carry along is great as due to the lens that allows pictures to be taken from a far shots that are taken up close are very detailed and loose very little quality when zoomed after been taken. The camera features auto subject detection that will help those who are always messing up there shots due to shaky handy, like me. I often take good shots but then I have to delete them as they are always more than not a bit shaky, I have in the past had to take multiple shots just in case. With the Panasonic DMC-ZS8 all I have to do is point wait and shoot and for the majority of my shots they appear as i intended without the shaky effect, you know what i mean.

What comes with this camera?

Right out of the box you will receive the following accessories: Battery Charger and the battery pack, a USB data cable, handy hand strap,Instillation CD, AV cable and of course the Panasonic DMC-ZS8.

Color Options

The Panasonic DMC-ZS8 comes in Sleek black and Silver, we however recommend the black as its in our option the cooler looking of the two and less likely over time to show the long term effects of owner ship as would the silver that in most devices does not age gracefully.

All The Specifications:

  • DMC-ZS8 comes with 14.1 Mega Pixel lens with 16 x optical zoom capability for superb shots at a distance with maximum quality even up close.
  • Built in microphone and the ability to record full motion video with detailed sound.
  • Rechargeable battery that saves on long term battery cost simply buy charge and forget it.
  • In frame subject detection and stabilization to reduce shaky pictures and video.
  • Built in flash to insure maximum exposure especially in dark or overcast conditions.

User Interface and layout

The user interface was quite intuitive and if you have ever used a digital camera before you need no introductions, just simply unbox and you will feel quite at home with the intuitive layout of the features across this camera.

Towards the front of the device the very bright and illuminating flash can be seen with the clear Panasonic branding in chrome silver markings with the many other features of the camera splashed across the device.

The lens that is most impressive is retractable and only shows itself when the device is powered on and ready to take a picture.

Towards the top of the device can be found the power On and off switch which is quite nice considering those with cumbersome hands will not be able to accidentally power off the device as it requires a full slide in either direction to power the device up or cycle it off.

The dedicated zoom nob features a dial like rotation to zoom in and out, a welcomed change from the tradition hard button up and down nobs on most other brands, this leads for smooth zooming in and out as you nudge the zoom circular nob either way for a in or out zoom effect.

Right next to this is a mode button to switch between the many functions that the camera has such as video recording and the works, some features are gimmicky and will hardly be used in my option but I cannot speak to every versatile situation this camera may be used in so I guess others might find some of these modes that I do not use to be useful. Better to have in than k need and not have is always good, your needs might change down the road.

The display LCD is a nice feature that comes standard on all cameras today but for convenience the guys at Panasonic have place some quick buttons for the most common uses such a switching between picture and video mode, deleting pictures on the fly and a navigation pad to review your pictures in real time, should you choose to want to delete a pic or two to save on storage right away.
